Genre beckons audiences with a promise. A great genre story checks the boxes by giving the audiences what they want while adding in an authorial perspective that comments on what happens. The revisions are never for the author, but rather for the audience. Revisions allow Wright to take Nicholas Angel’s girlfriend from an early draft and merge her with his new police force partner. Respecting audiences demands dedication. New directors likely start by making short films, which both makes sense and is problematic. Since short films have their own needs and structure but filmmakers do not often get to see shorts as nearly as feature-length shows, they have less opportunity to fully analyze the short form.
