ABSTRACT

Each day people rely upon nonverbal communication to reinforce what they say. More importantly, nonverbal communication cornerstones aesthetics—by controlling how content is presented through media, artists share information obliquely or surreptitiously with audiences. Pre-production sets up everything in production and post-production for active decision-making. A scene might start with a static wide, evolve into mismatched shot/reverse shots, and then slide back into a moving wide shot tracking character movement. The director’s job was to provide a clear picture of what happens in the story; now the task is to see if the crew heads’ suggestions align with their understanding of the subtext, intentions, and actions. Creative conversations with the crew heads in pre-production allows directors to have the right tools on set. It can save the production time instead of going back and forth as the rest of the cast and crew waits.
