ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines a history of land use management from the earliest codes in Greece, India, and China to the advent of zoning in France and Germany in the nineteenth century. It also discusses and critiques land use zoning as adopted for segregationist rather than community development purposes in the United States and Anglophone colonies. Moving from this international perspective, the chapter then traces the evolution of land use management in South Africa. It concludes with an overview of the current situation in South Africa.
