ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to identify differences in language practices across time and space. It describes constructing a techno-linguistic biography as a background for examining in more detail the linguistic choices made on social media. Techno-linguistic biographies are a type of techno-biography – in short, a life story about technologies. Researching the self and developing techno-biography links in with narrative research. It is also part of a growing methodology, that of researching oneself through an auto-ethnography, whereby the researcher makes their position explicit in the ethnographic research process. Throughout this ethnographic process, the concept of practices remains central, where skills and habits are located in this broader concept. This contributes to developing the language of description used to describe the social world and how the uses of technology fit into people's lives.
