ABSTRACT

This chapter is divided into two sections. The first section introduces Design Thinking as a process to gather knowledge and develop social entrepreneurial ideas that has gained significant traction in social entrepreneurship ecosystems. A brief history of Design Thinking is followed by the explanation of the main phases that constitute a Design Thinking process, based on the approach taken by the d.school at Stanford University. The second section explains what a mission statement is and why it is important for social entrepreneurial organisations to write one, before presenting the Theory of Change as a framework helpful to translate a social entrepreneurial idea into plans. The description of what constitutes a Theory of Change is followed by the explanation of how to build one and a reflection on the benefits and limitations of this framework.
