ABSTRACT

This chapter presents short 'chunks' of theories and how they can be applied in practice. Theories have been used to test gravity, the speed of light, general relatively, evolution and other big things. Agenda setting theory centres on how the mass media selects and prioritises news. In turn, people look to the media for indications of where they should focus their attention and what issues are priorities, based on the emphasis the media places on issues. Capacity building is a concept or process about combining the skills and knowledge of people within a community to achieve mutual goals. Critical theory is a set of theoretical frameworks that consider injustice and oppression in society and culture, suggesting how to create possibilities for freedom and equality of people and values. Situational theory is based on the idea that the level of recognition, involvement and the ability to affect a situation determines how people behave in relation to that problem, issue or situation.
