ABSTRACT

The Hierarchy of Landscape Realms pattern was also applied in the campus planning for Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch, Australia, in which a continuous landscape character is woven throughout the hospital precinct. Courtyards reconnect people to nature and daylight for those working in the functional units located deep inside the hospital block. In the case of a dense site, the choice of a mid- or high-rise hospital building with a narrow footprint constrains the development of gardens on the horizontal dimension. Vertical gardens and cutouts expand people–nature contact beyond the ground level, introducing interesting views while offering “get away” opportunities for the occupants on the upper floors of the tower. A central garden or smaller open spaces that lie between the buildings, in a positive convex and embracing gesture toward the buildings, usually lead to a positive quality of the space.
