ABSTRACT

The Cultural Inclusion Manifesto was developed in 2018 as a response to the lack of access to artistic and cultural opportunities for disabled children and young people. Many special educational needs and/or disabilities and arts and culture organisations had been setting a path towards greater inclusion of young people with disabilities in arts and culture for some time, but final inspiration for the Manifesto was the West London Inclusive Arts Festival. The barriers that the social model of disability identifies can lead to social exclusion and affect how people are perceived and valued. The disability is the social consequence and impact that the impairment leads to and is a social construct of disability. The social model of disability is in opposition to the medical model of disability which locates the barriers within the individual.
