ABSTRACT

All aircraft need inspecting, repairing and servicing in accordance with approved maintenance procedures. These procedures depend on the requirements of the manufacturer and of the authority for each type of operation and on the legislative framework of use, i.e. public transport, aerial work, or private flight. This chapter deals principally with transport category aircraft and their maintenance programme. The Maintenance Review Board (MRB) takes into account the views and suggestions of the maintenance steering committee which consists not only of the manufacturer and authority but also prospective operators. The manufacturer turns the Maintenance Review Board Report (MRBR) into a practical document known as the Maintenance Planning Document from which operators implement their maintenance by way of the Approved Maintenance Programme (AMP). The AMP will provide for all inspections of structure, systems and equipment considered necessary by the manufacturer. It prescribes tests devised to detect failures not readily evident to crews or maintenance personnel where such failure could adversely affect airworthiness.
