ABSTRACT

This chapter is all about referencing. Referencing, in particular OSCOLA style referencing, is often dreaded by students and writers. Learning how to cite and to reflect on who to cite is an important part of a research process. Every dissertation, journal article and a book builds on the work of those who have written about the topic before us, and citing that work is a way for an author to acknowledge those that have influenced their work. This chapter attempts to de-mystify referencing by giving practical guidance on referencing skills, and examples and exercises to practice both OSCOLA and Harvard style referencing. The chapter focuses on the practical side of referencing, yet reminds readers that citation practice is not just a tick box exercise.
