ABSTRACT

Over the last decade or so the global media landscape has dramatically changed from a situation where there were only a few providers to one where everyone can be connected to multiple media sources. While the amount of global media outlets might have exploded there is a danger that our students become overwhelmed and prefer to use their social media tools as bubbles to protect them from too much information rather than as opportunities to imaginatively explore the world and connect with people from other countries. This chapter discusses several approaches to address these issues - such approaches must include critical media literacy and how networks can function to serve the corporations’ needs rather than your own. From that foundation it is possible to explore the ways certain social media platforms dedicated to education can work to increase empathy and global understanding.
