Before experimental analysis of the simulation model can begin, it is necessary to ensure that the model constructed provides a valid representation of the system we are studying. This process consists of verification and validation of the simulation model. Although verification and validation are critical in the development of a simulation model, unfortunately there is no set of specific tests that can easily be applied to determine the ‘correctness’ of a model (Sargent, 2013). This means the simulation developer will need to ensure that verification and validation methods are applied appropriately to each individual simulation study. Methods for verification and validation of DES models will now be discussed in more detail.
