ABSTRACT

A key chapter of the book, Chapter 7 explores the question of luxury and sustainability in depth. It opens the scene with the Sustainability Note 7 which is based on the Japanese concept of “Mottainai". Two luxury materials that are often criticised in the fashion industry - leather and fur - are examined in full (including the question of tanneries and traditional use) and invite the reader to reflect and develop a personal view on the matter. Further frameworks and theories introduced are the three pillars of sustainability according to the United Nations and the Bruntland Report, the Triple Bottom Line by John Elkington, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Creating Shared Value (CSV) frameworks add further knowledge. Further possible sustainable solutions such as the triple-A approach to ethical activism, the conceptual framework for sustainability and a case study on the luxury brand LOEWE offer positive perspectives. Three remarkable expert insights include an interview with Bernice Pan, the founder of the sustainable luxury brand Deploy, a contribution by sustainability consultant Ellen Pabst von Ohain and an interview with Dilys Williams, who is the founder of the Centre for Sustainable Fashion.
