ABSTRACT

Rachel Tomlinson is the head teacher of Barrowford Primary School in Lancashire and has been a primary school head teacher for 12 years. These approaches that we talk about a lot now, but when that happened, that was not a period of time where we did necessarily have such a broad conversation around relational approaches to behavior. Just like we all start to walk and talk at different times, we all learn how to do long division at different times as well and some of us don't ever learn to do it at all, because sometimes we don't need to. Actually, behavior management policies are law, schools have to have one we have (behavior management policy) in brackets just to indicate that our relationships policy replaces it. Sometimes those ripples are really negative and when they are, we have to take responsibility for it and work really hard to put that right.
