ABSTRACT

This short concluding chapter highlights how hazards can occur independently or in combinations, sometimes resulting in compound events. Mitigation and adaptation solutions to hazards and environmental change are usually undertaken together. Both interdisciplinary and stakeholder engagement approaches to delivering solutions on environmental hazards and environmental change are often required. The Sustainable Development Goals are driving national and international governmental and non-governmental organisations to work towards solutions that both eradicate poverty and protect the environment. Societal and environmental impact-focused research has yielded many environmental solutions, but curiosity-driven research has also provided accidental discoveries that have yielded important benefits, and such serendipitous research should be allowed to flourish.
