ABSTRACT

In the academic year 1992/1993, I was a Fulbright visiting scholar at the Department of Performance Studies, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University. It gave me the chance to participate in the Grotowski Seminar (February 23–27, 1993) for free, organized by the NYU Program in Educational Theatre (Robert Taylor) and University of Kansas in Lawrence (Robert Findlay). The topic of the seminar was Grotowski's theatrical output at the Polish Laboratory Theatre in 1959–1969. The main point of the program was a meeting with Jerzy Grotowski on February 26; I also had the opportunity to listen to speeches by many outstanding American artists and scholars, including Robert Findlay, André Gregory, Gerald Rabkin, and James Slowiak. Participation in the seminar made me realize how many American hopes, dreams, expectations, and stereotypes can be reawakened and activated as a result of a meeting with Grotowski and his theatrical achievements.
