ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter provides an overview of key concepts of white-collar crime and crimes of the powerful, including a discussion of Edwin Sutherland’s legacy and the development of the Yale school of thought. The chapter then offers an introduction to the concepts of state crime, corporate crime, state-corporate crime, and crimes of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. We then provide a broad overview of some of the types of crimes committed by the powerful followed by a discussion of the costs of such crimes, harms, and violence.
