ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we provide an overview of theory’s purpose, levels of analysis, and theory integration. From there we provide an overview of the various theoretical frameworks that have been used to explain crimes of the powerful. We take a broad approach in presenting relevant theories to demonstrate that crimes of the powerful are not parsimonious events, acontextual or ahistorical, but are complex phenomena that must account for a broad array of conditions including individual agency. Consequentially, we include criminological theories and other interdisciplinary theories.
