ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the early books. The Mis-Education Years deals with Ross's last two years at the fictional Castlerock College and the Leinster Senior Cup victory in rugby. The Teenage Dirtbag Years sees Ross attend college at UCD. The Orange Mocha-Chip Frappuccino Years presents Ross leaving home and working for his friend JP's father as an estate agent. We see the importance of Father Fehily, his headmaster, in his life, and his difficult relationship with his parents, who spoil him but do not seem to love him. His treatment of women as sexual conquests is critiqued as is his sense of privilege, with comparisons and contrasts to situations in the real Ireland.
