ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 offers a comprehensive account of the progression of COVID-19 in Korea. The chapter commences by scrutinizing the tally of confirmed cases during the early days of the outbreak and how this resulted in numerous transmission events from 2020 to May 2022. The chapter proceeds to highlight the patterns in the incidence of new confirmed cases and fatalities, and the corresponding measures that Korea adopted in response, including the shift to online classes, closure of entire buildings in the event of a confirmed case, and the enforcement of mandatory quarantine at medical facilities for ten days. Additionally, this chapter examines the shifts in fatality rates, the economic repercussions for Korea, the progress of vaccination rates, and the prompt disbursement of disaster relief funds.
