ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 claims that learning from COVID-19 should not be limited to public health care issues. With COVID-19 having caused such an immense global impact, there is a need to thoroughly ensure that important factors and lessons do not become overlooked. The key to this is to broaden the horizons of how we analyze and what we choose to learn from this experience. In order to do so, this chapter raises the challenges of path dependency. We also identify some of the key factors that contribute to successful response policies. These include effective communication and coordination among stakeholders, early and widespread testing, and clear and consistent messaging from government authorities. By analyzing these factors and their contribution to success, we can begin to develop alternative scenarios and explanations that can help us avoid path dependency.
