ABSTRACT

This chapter uses Pamela Callow’s Kate Lange series (2010–present) as a representative example of the Canadian legal thriller, which addresses complex epistemological and ethical questions with fast-paced action designed to bring the reader a thrill or frisson. Drawing upon my interview with the author, I report that Callow considers the thriller to be “society’s conscience.” In her Kate Lange series, Callow pairs murder mysteries with thorny and timely legal issues around issues such as new biomedical technologies, the right to medical assistance in death, and the protection of whistleblowers in order to perform an ultimately hopeful feminist analysis of trauma and resilience.
