ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the digital scene and considers what your personal online profile should look like, both before and after you land a job. Authors look at writing for the internet, maximising the reach of your stories, and following and shaping their success through analytical tools. Writing online does not just mean producing material for the website it takes in chat apps, newsletters and social networks too. The democratisation of the web is still in evidence with blogging, vlogging, podcasting and personal websites, and the huge volume of news, in its loosest sense, circulated informally, both publicly and privately, within social networks. Junior jobs in online operations tend to involve a fair amount of versioning taking news material that has already been gathered by others, and transforming it into something that fits the platform on which it will appear: a website or a specific social network.
