ABSTRACT

Radio can sometimes be regarded as a bit old-fashioned or staid compared with the glamour of television or the bracing airs of the internet. If that is what you think, think again. Radio is a massively popular and successful medium. It employs thousands of journalists who would never want to work anywhere else, and as a medium for news it has distinct advantages over print, television and the internet. When you are working on radio output, you are communicating with an enormous audience. Around 90 per cent of people in the UK listen to the radio every week. That is many millions of people. They have a choice of more than 600 licensed radio stations. And for most of those stations, a regular bulletin of news, sport and weather is a regular feature, usually at the top of every hour. Local radio stations cannot run large national or international reporting networks.
