ABSTRACT

This chapter consists of contributions from a number of distinguished specialist journalists. Most specialists are journalists first and specialists second. In other words, they train and work as general reporters at the start of their careers before deciding to concentrate on a particular area. It is unusual, but not unheard of, for people with specialist knowledge and expertise but no journalistic background to become journalists. In every sector the specialist media is packed with expertise and excellence. Those journalists already doing the job – the opposition – are our guides to what the reporters need to know to navigate the field. The world needs specialist journalists. Experts play a vital role in a healthy democracy. Always have a specialism up our sleeve. It doesn’t have to define our career, but it certainly can’t do the reporters any harm.
