ABSTRACT
The API was set up to help the news industry live up to the principles of the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which states: Congress shall make no law.abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press. The blizzard of information available on the internet, and the willingness of many to misinform or mislead, puts a real premium on high-quality journalism, produced by professionals and dedicated to providing fair, honest and accurate news, information and analysis. A relatively new but rapidly expanding role for journalism is delving deep into the internet to try to find those stories. But, essential and fundamental though it is, news is just one part of the wider business of journalism, which takes the raw materials and turns them into something of use and value. In looking at societal responsibilities and at distinctions between journalism and news, we have inevitably adopted a rather narrow view of journalism.
