ABSTRACT

A short introduction that sets the context for the book, explaining the role and importance as well as the challenges of small states in global institutions with a particular focus on the role of Laos. It includes a brief look at the literature on the subjects being presented, as well as the theoretical framework for analysis, drawing insights from political science and political geography. The chapter then outlines how the rest of the book will be presented, including a mixture between substantive exploration of the institutions and issues being discussed, the nature of Laos engagement and leadership, and professional experiences of the authors in revealing insights into the working of international organizations, some of the negotiations behind closed doors and the compromises and resolutions reached.
