ABSTRACT

This chapter offers practical recommendations for creating a successful public history digital story. It provides description of the seven steps of digital storytelling adapted for public history. Without an emotional connection to the digital story, audiences are far less likely to be engaged. In some ways it can be more difficult to help digital storytellers pinpoint the emotions in their work, especially if they have yet to connect to it themselves. For many digital storytellers, determining the moment of change is challenging. One of the most common struggles that beginning digital storytellers face is how to help the audience see the story they are trying to tell. When writing the script for a public history digital story, the first priority is accuracy of factual information, but emotional content is nearly as important. Filmmakers use storyboards to help them focus and to coordinate all layers of their films. Digital storytellers use them too for the same reason.
