ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors reviews the seven elements of digital storytelling. They work together to reimagine those elements as they apply to public history digital storytelling. The authors then provides an example of how they use the seven elements as a language with which to talk about “A Town Called Donora,” one of the first public history digital stories created within the framework of the collaboration. Determining point of view early on in the storytelling process helps shape the narrative and the ways in which it is received by the audience. Despite the label, the dramatic question is usually in the form of a declarative sentence that raises questions in the audience’s mind. Voice quality is as important to digital storytelling as is the script itself. It is essential that the tone of voice complement the emotional content of the story, for example. A one-for-one soundtrack is not necessary and may negatively impact the digital story.
