ABSTRACT

Education within a liberal society has been considered here as an issue for people already living within such a society, and already committed to the perpetuation of its ideals and principles. But education as a practical activity is something which unites all human societies, and the liberal ideal, while it may be regarded in a particular context as a matter of personal or at least societal choice, includes elements which have wider, indeed universal, appeal. It is under this aspect that the value system of liberalism is frequently expressed in terms of human rights - moral rights attaching to persons in all orders of society, whether recognised by those societies or not.
