ABSTRACT

Chapter 10 provides a synthesis of all the information discussed in this book. More than a summary, this chapter is designed to activate within the reader a greater amount of unconscious processing for a deeper consolidation of information. The core therapeutic strategies that are revisited with detailed case examples include: prediction as a psychotherapeutic technique, the use of imaginative involvement for strategic memory reconsolidation, mental contrasting with specific implementation intentions, and the use of response expectancies to facilitate an incubation period for deliberation without conscious awareness. In contrast to hypnotherapy, these clinical devices support the use of dual processing (cross-talk theory) with emphasis on the importance of fostering a growth mindset through the exercise of individual choice, creativity, and self-organizing change.
