ABSTRACT

Primary law collections, such as court cases and legislation, are some of the most obvious datasets to be used as legal data, and potential sources for them include courts, legislative bodies, government printers, and publishers depending on the jurisdiction. Suitable sources for this kind of data may be available from government agencies or other sources such as university researchers. Some sources of data are openly available, while others are available by subscription, and some are internal to organizations. Governments around the world have been making more data available in recent years, especially statistical data. Court data can include the documents written and submitted by litigating parties. Case law is one of the most common and most contentious data sources. One of the most common discussions in how law firms do business has been in the area of billing. Governments could choose to design and pass laws this way, and it could remove ambiguity from the legislation.
