ABSTRACT

In this chapter we consider models that have been used as potentially better ways of understanding physical activity than more single-theory approaches, especially for behaviour change. In particular, we focus on stage-based approaches, including the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). We consider research findings and the constructs of self-efficacy, pros and cons, and processes of change, including evidence from systematic reviews and interventions. We also look at the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) and consider the relapse prevention model and ‘natural history model’.
