ABSTRACT

Interventions to change physical activity can be categorised in different ways, including by population and setting. For young people, many interventions target the school setting. In this chapter, we address the evidence concerning how effective interventions have been in increasing physical activity for young people. In addition to looking at overall trends and mediators of behaviour change, we summarise evidence specifically on girls; school-based interventions (including new running initiatives and those taking place in the after-school period); active travel; the use of pedometers; community and family interventions; and the use of mass media. Evidence of efficacy and effectiveness can be found, but often effects are small and variable. Greater emphasis is required on intervention implementation and delivery.
