ABSTRACT

There has been global concern about the physical activity levels of adults and older adults. Interventions to promote physical activity are required to reverse this trend. In this chapter, we address interventions designed to increase physical activity in this population. Specifically, we summarise the evidence concerning the effectiveness of physical activity interventions for these age groups in different settings (e.g., workplaces and primary health care) and through different approaches, such as using electronic (e)- and mobile (m)-health and technology. We also focus on interventions that have promoted walking and cycling, and discuss the use of pedometers as a tool to promote physical activity. In addition, evidence for physical activity interventions in socially disadvantaged groups, black and minority ethnic groups, and adults with disability are considered.
