ABSTRACT

A fundamental question in the psychology of physical activity is: ‘Does physical activity make you feel good?’ In this chapter, we review the evidence on the relationship between participation in physical activity and psychological well-being from the perspective of single bouts of exercise and from involvement in physical activity over time. We review the areas of mood and affect, health-related quality of life, enjoyment and sleep, as well as psychological well-being for women. We also consider the role of exercise intensity. Important discussion is provided on the measurement of affective responses.
