ABSTRACT

Many Nigerians in the diaspora have made significant contributions to health care education, but their contributions are enshrouded to the rest of the world. This chapter aims to identify the elite Nigerian health care academics in the diaspora. A snowball sampling strategy and an exhaustive search of several Nigerian affairs-leaning websites were conducted to obtain the names of full professors and consultants in all health disciplines. The searches produced 115 academics from different parts of the world that met the study criteria. The top six academics with the highest H-index – Olopade (84), Rotimi (68) Achilefu (56), Odunsi (55), Johnson (44) Dagogo-Jack (44) – are all from the United States, followed by Uchegbu (42) from the United Kingdom, and Nwariaku/Lucas (38) from the United States. Only 15% of the academics had H-index score higher than 30, another 15% had score between 20 and 29, and 70% had score less than 20. Only 5% of the academics expressed any desire to relocate to the homeland in the future. The prevailing insecurity in Nigeria manifested by the wave of kidnapping, and poor work conditions are challenges that must be overcome for them to relocate to the country.
