ABSTRACT

In many countries around the world, including Nigeria, academic department chairs or heads of departments are appointed into the administrative position without any formal training on their roles and responsibilities. This chapter is the quintessential source of information for such academic administrators as it describes the university organization structure, opportunities, and challenges in the administration of health care educational programs. It also discusses the roles and responsibilities of heads of departments in program assessment, evaluation of faculty performance in the teaching, scholarship of discovery, and service domains. The chapter provides sample program assessment tools (course evaluation, head of department, and peer evaluation of teaching performance forms, student exit, alumni, and employers’ satisfaction survey questionnaires), and offered pertinent recommendations for newly appointed heads of departments.
