ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book begins in the late seventeenth century with Williams's invasion, the battle of Wincanton, and the ideology of absolute property. It shows how the production of Bath got under way in the mid-1720s. The book looks in detail the hidden contradiction and shows how it was reflected in the townscape itself. It describes the transformation of social structure and the generation of social movements antithetical to the continued domination of a class of privileged agrarian capitalists a domination in Bath made more visible by the very structure of the city itself. The book explores in detail more about the urban structure and social relations of Bath.
