When We Talk About Parents and Families, Who Is Included?

This chapter begins by describing who is included in the terms parent and family. The authors then describe traditional approaches to working with parents and families often described as parent involvement. The key characteristics of parent involvement are described, and the limitations of this approach outlined. The authors then describe why there is a shift towards family engagement and they provide an overview of the characteristics of a parent and family engagement approach.
