ABSTRACT

Embedding a whole institutional approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion is a powerful way of promoting deep inclusion within educational environments. We know that homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic bullying still exists within schools and universities and that institutional commitments to LGBTQ+ inclusion are variable. However, addressing bullying is both insufficient and reactive. Education plays a powerful role in advancing social justice within society. Institutions need to teach students that not only is it unacceptable to demonstrate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia through words and actions but also morally wrong to even think homophobic, biphobic, and transphobic thoughts in the first place, even if these are not enacted. The transformative role of education in changing attitudes cannot be overstated.
