ABSTRACT

LGBTQ+ students in higher education may experience bullying, harassment, and discrimination. However, university can be a positive experience which provides students with an opportunity to explore their gender identities and sexual orientations. A whole institutional approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion in higher education includes a variety of dimensions. Attention to the physical and emotional environment of the campus is important to foster a sense of belonging but it is not sufficient. The higher education curriculum should directly address matters of race, sexual orientation, disability, and gender if universities seek to establish a sense of belonging for students with non-normative identities. There are also training implications for personal academic tutors, well-being services, careers services, finance teams, and accommodation teams so that service providers can more effectively meet the needs of LGBTQ+ students.
