ABSTRACT

Labels can be a powerful way of signifying one’s identity. In relation to the LGBTQ+ community, using and adopting categories to describe sexual orientation or gender identity can support individuals to connect with others, increase visibility, and develop a proud queer identity. Reclaiming derogatory language which was once intended to create hurt, shame, and exclusion can be viewed as an act of resistance or transgression which fosters empowerment and pushes back at dominant heteronormative and ableist discourses. However, LGBTQ+ youth may choose to reject identify labels and categories completely. Rejecting labels which may position individuals as tragic victims could also be viewed as an act of resistance or transgression. This chapter explores queer, crip, and trans-informed perspectives.
