ABSTRACT

Developing an LGBTQ+ curriculum is important so that identities do not become invisible. Young people need to see themselves, their lives, and their families represented in the curriculum. This will foster a sense of belonging, which is crucial to overall well-being. If the curriculum does not address LGBTQ+ content, significant individuals who were or are LGBTQ+ and have contributed to developments within subjects are essentially erased and this only presents a partial perspective on subject development. The curriculum in schools and universities is often male, pale, and stale. To understand the present, the curriculum should foster an understanding of the past and therefore it is essential that the school curriculum include content on LGBTQ+ history. Other subjects can also play an important role in furthering social justice.
