ABSTRACT

This chapter consists of two texts. The first text is Dealing with an Ageing Population. The number of Chinese senior citizens has been rapidly increasing, which has led to serious challenges to China’s pension security and pension services. This article describes the characteristics of China’s ageing population and its impact on society and the economy. The second text is Why does the Younger Generation not Want to Get married and Have Children? China’s continually declining marriage and birth rates are closely related to the rapid economic growth and changes to societal norms. This has resulted in the younger generation facing competing pressures from their work, family expectations and society’s traditional values. This article discusses various viewpoints of Chinese young adults towards marriage, family and childrearing.
