ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the special power in walking a jury through a crime scene versus presenting them with still photos and 2D diagrams. The advent of 3D Laser Scanning as a means to capture and show crime scene details has become so compelling that it is now welcome in nearly any courtroom. The technology enables either a prosecution or defense team to bring a scene into the courtroom so that everyone can view it at the same time. The beauty of 3D laser scanning is that it is accomplished with photography and scanned points that are registered together and are calibrated, precise, and accurate. It is the reason so many reconstructionists and police departments now use this method to document their crime scenes and present their evidence of a crime in court.
