ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the valuable and expanding use of height approximation to aid with identifying one or multiple suspects in a crime has been the thrust. The user selects common points between the point cloud generated by the laser scanner and the image so that the picture can be aligned over the scan to determine a suspect's height. So Sharp decided to stitch laser scans and CCTV footage/images together, using some basic trigonometry methods, which enabled him to ascertain a suspect's height more accurately. Because the original video camera could see the 3D location of the suspect's feet, it was easy for Fries to place a 3D model showing the suspect's feet in the same location. Fast-forward to the 21st century and the process of accurately determining the height of a criminal suspect seen in security surveillance video footage is highly refined.
