ABSTRACT

This chapter has focused on steps for properly marking a crime or crash scene to be laser scanned, scanner placement and height adjustment, and the crucial post-processing and 3D modeling stages. Capturing a crime or crash scene with a 3D laser scanner is just a matter of setting up the device at the scene and pressing a button to activate scanning. The segmentation process makes it helpful to study crime scenes that involve structures, such as a house or public building. The laser scanner is able to document indoor and outdoor scenes in high resolution and with ample measurements of rooms and environments. Dynamic Safety’s on the effectiveness of these scanner scene marking tools provided one caveat: the distance where the marks were well-defined and visible varied based on lighting, road conditions, and moisture, among other factors. Dynamic Safety LLC recommends staggering the laser scanner placement from one side to another, keeping a 70-foot radius between scanner placements.
