ABSTRACT

Using selected indicators with a particular focus on 5G and artificial intelligence, this chapter provides an overview of the struggle for technological supremacy between China and the United States. This chapter endeavors to answer the question of whether or not the accusations that China is secretly seeking technological supremacy can be proven and, more importantly, whether or not this goal can be achieved. In addition to analyzing some of the main indicators of this struggle between the two countries, special attention will be paid to the development of ideas that attempt to frame the rapid growth of the Chinese economy⏤China’s rise debate, the decoupling vs. engagement dilemma, and the paradigm of the Asian developmental state⏤and place them in a geopolitical and geoeconomic 1 context. This overview of ideas and indicators will lead us to the second chapter of this book and prepare us to understand what is happening on the European continent.
