ABSTRACT

The concept of generations has been discussed in the social sciences since the 1920s, when it was developed by Karl Mannheim, a sociologist and philosopher. Most authors refer to this last post-war generation in alphabetical order as “Generation Z”. Greta’s generation is driven by the concern that the world will no longer be worth inhabiting in just a few short years. Within the movement, attitudes towards Greta Thunberg are often ambivalent; outside of the movement, in some school classes, the name Greta makes people groan – even though climate protection is important to them. Thunberg’s fundamental message is that politicians must take action immediately, since her generation must live on this planet much longer than they will. The environmental movement Fridays for Future is based on the work of countless older people, many of whom have been committed to climate protection and an environmentally responsible lifestyle for decades.
